Artist Spotlight: Modern, Cheerful Holiday Greetings from Ben Wagner
Ben Wagner’s fun-yet-elegant designs are always favorite on Tendr.com. We’re excited to have his card in our holiday collection and wanted to learn more about the artist behind them.
Unlike many designers, Ben Wagner didn’t start out on a creative path. In college, he was was on a very different path in the beginning.
“I actually excelled in math and science, and planned to major in Applied Mathematics or Actuarial Science and Risk Management,” he says.
So how did he get started with design from such a different field? It all started with an Intro to Typography class when he was at college.
“When I took an “Introduction to Typography” course, everything clicked, he says.
“Design was a way to use my systematic ‘left brain’ and creative ‘right brain’ at once.”
Describing his style as “approachable, clean, and modern, with a wink of personality,” Ben’s designs are the kind that appeal to pretty much anyone.
“I used to get upset when people would describe my projects as playful, whimsical, or overly commercial,” he says. But, these days, Ben says he’s embracing those descriptions.
Now that he is running his own business, Ben says there are lots of things he loves about going to work every day.
“I think the number one thing is the flexibility in terms of the type of work I’m able to take on and to be able to work from home or travel,” he says.
“I also like that I’m able to see the impact of my work directly. I like working on branding for small businesses because I can see the transformative power that design can have for businesses.”
Ben’s holidays plans are a self-described “marathon”, since his family celebrates the holiday three times.
“We celebrate with my mom’s family the week before, my immediate family on Christmas Eve, and my dad’s family on Christmas Day,” he says.
“It’s one of the only times my entire family gets together each year so I’ve learned to appreciate it.”
