Meet the artist behind Screech Owl Design, Jacqueline Schmidt! Her awesome cards are in Tendr’s Holiday 2016 Collection and our standing collection. Check out our interview and see what inspires her!
1. What’s your name, location and title?
Jacqueline Schmidt, Brooklyn NY.
Founder of Screech Owl Design.
Director of Design for Ollie
2. How did you become interested in illustration/art/design? What made you decide to pursue art as your career?
Making art for me is completely natural and as a result I look forward to making it.
I’ve been drawing since I can remember and when I became an adult, I realized that I could make a career doing what I love most. That seemed like the best way to spend my days. I feel very blessed to make a living from my ideas and vision.
3. What inspires you to create?
Now that I am a mother of two boys, I am teeming with even more ideas.
The kids have such vivid imaginations and it’s almost contagious.
Our last bedtime routine in the night is storytelling. Sometimes I’m amazed at the stuff we whip up. It just flows through all three of us and definitely gets channeled and fed back into my work when I am in the studio. I guess you could say my boys are also my muses.
4. What’s a typical day like for you when you’re drawing/illustrating/creating?
My best environment for drawing requires either quiet or music, my inbox empty, my desk clear, and direct light. I seem to do my best work when I’m alone and calm. I tend to only go to the paper when I have ideas. Since becoming a mom, I don’t spend much time sketching.
I’ve got limited time so when it’s time to create, it’s time to create. Otherwise i may miss that window of creativity.
5. What are some of your holiday/Christmas traditions (either personal or cultural)?
We have a ritual of going to florida every year with our family. The warmth and time with our family is rejuvenating and a nice break from New York City.
