How Max and Michael's Tendr Wedding Registry is Making Their Dream Home a Reality

How Max and Michael's Tendr Wedding Registry is Making Their Dream Home a Reality

Max Rodriguez and Michael Loper-Rodriguez were friends for years before they started dating. Living in New York City, they traveled together and hung out the way pals do. After four years of close friendship, they decided to give dating a try.

“We very quickly realized that it was working out and was exactly what he and I had both been looking for,” says Max.

Michael remembers a similar feeling of kismet.

“Max was looking for a partner that had long-term plans and a certain set of values. I think as we got to know each other, he saw that in me,” Michael says.

After they got engaged, the couple started thinking about where they wanted to live and raise a family once they were married.

“We started talking about the future and where we wanted to settle. We figured we’d probably move a year or so after the wedding,” Max says.

“We found this house in Asbury Park, four houses down from our good friends,” says Michael.

Despite their original plan to wait until after the wedding to buy a house, they seized the opportunity knowing a house like this wasn’t going to come along again.

They loved the location and exterior but decided to renovate the interior.

“We took on the house and a full gut-renovation,” says Max.

That is how Michael and Max found themselves planning a wedding, a move to a new city, a renovation and starting new jobs all at the same time. Where some might be overwhelmed, they welcomed all of the changes.

“It’s a lot, but I think we were both kind of ready to grow up and move on to the next stage and adventure in life,” says Max.

To help make this time of big changes a little easier, the couple created on a cash registry on Tendr for their wedding. With a Tendr house fund, their wedding guests could contribute to building their dream home.

“People choose a cash registries for different reasons, but right now, the renovation is our baby” Michael explains. “Inviting people into that project, to me, was more emotional, than just getting beautiful keepsakes.”

To help them make their guests feel more comfortable with the idea of giving money as a wedding gift, Max and Michael cleverly used their Tendr page to show their guests photos from their renovation.

“We wanted to be able to build out the page to help people understand why and what it is we’re doing,” Max says.

By inviting guests into their renovation plans, Max and Michael are hoping to show guests how meaningful a cash gift is. It’s not just money — it’s a lifetime of memories in their home.

“We wanted to build out the page to help people visualize our plans as best as possible.” says Max.

Helping wedding guests understand their renovation plans is a way for Max and Michael to show their loved ones how their cash gift is allowing the newlyweds’ dreams to come true.

“I think when I picture being in the house, I’m most excited for Christmas,” Max says. “To be able to have all of our different families come together under one roof to celebrate is super exciting. I often find myself daydreaming about the future spent with family and kids in our house.”

When it comes to creating a cash registry or house fund for your own wedding, Michael has some simple advice for couples.

"Don’t be afraid to set up a Tendr account for whatever you need. As long as it’s wrapped in a story and has some visual soul to it, you’ll come out feeling really positive, connected and grateful."

And the couple was grateful when they celebrated their wedding in September. Held on a Friday in Provincetown, Massachusetts, their guests were able to spend the rest of the weekend hanging out and exploring the area.

“Provincetown is just a really magical place, so we wanted everyone to kind of experience something that we love,” Max explains.

“The day was unreal,” says Michael of the wedding. “Everything was so planned out for that day but we took the time to write our own vows and really live in the moment, sharing them with each other and our guests for the first time.”

With their wedding in the books, the newlyweds are now turning all their attention to their final big project: their home renovation.

They’ve run into some snags with permits, which has set their timeline back by six months. But, instead of dwelling on the delay, they are looking at it as a blessing in disguise.

“It pushed out our renovation timeline making it easier to financially plan for the wedding and a new job.” says Michael.

“At the end of the day, because we have time and flexibility to do a little bit more with the house than we were initially planning on,” adds Max.

With the extra time and money from their house fund registry on Tendr, they are adding a few extra touches, like moving the laundry room to the top floor and a walk-in closet in the master suite. As Michael says, “A permit delay combined with Tendr allowed us to put that final touch on our dream house.”

With the renovation as the only remaining project, Max and Michael are looking forward to focusing on one thing for a while. And though they want to bring children into their family one day, Max and Michael say they'll finish with the house before they start with that journey.

By this time next year, they're hoping to have everything complete so they can host the first of many holiday gatherings with their family and friends.

“I’m imagining a lot of holiday dinners and people staying over,” says Michael.
